Chinese military

China appears to have built two military facilities in just one month as part of the military naval port of Ream in Cambodia, Business Insider writes.

Such suspicion is confirmed by satellite images of the American company Maxar. But the whole story is full of mysteries and non-transparency. The Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen, who has been in power since 1985 and is accused by many of autocratic rule, rejects claims that these are Chinese facilities and refers to the constitution according to which they must not allow a foreign military presence. It does not offer an explanation of what is in the satellite images.

At the same time, the Prime Minister’s denial of the thesis about a foreign army in Cambodia “does not hold” water because until recently, right next to the newly built facilities, there were two American military facilities. Under unexplained circumstances, the buildings were demolished by the Cambodian government in September and October last year. The official explanation is that the buildings are old and dilapidated. The American side protested the demolition and claimed they were not even notified.

Also in October last year, Admiral Vann Bunlieng announced for Nikkei that China would help them around the port of Ream to deepen the bottom of the port and help repair warships

In addition, in 2019, the Wall Street Journal uncovered a confidential agreement between Cambodia and China under which Beijing would allow military personnel to reside in Ream Harbor, store weapons and anchor warships for decades to come. The Prime Minister of Cambodia denies all that.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said they were concerned about China’s presence in Ream Harbor and that it would disrupt U.S.-Cambodia relations. By the way, China is a close ally of the government in Cambodia and they are cooperating more and more every year, and it has already helped Cambodia with several billion dollars in financial aid.

Analysts say this is just one step in spreading Chinese influence in the Pacific and Indian Oceans and the Southeast Asian region. Likewise, military expansion in Cambodia is a new threat to India.
