Nikolai Patrushev

Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation and former head of the Russian counterintelligence service – FSB Nikolai Patrushev said after a meeting with colleagues from the Collective Security Treaty Organization – CSTO – (Russian counterpart to NATO), he spoke about the withdrawal of the US military from Afghanistan.

Patrushev said the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan, which Washington is trying to portray as organized and coordinated, is a defeat for the United States, which is now leaving the country to its fate.

He recalled that the “Americans started this game”, trying to use Afghanistan as a springboard to project their geopolitical influence in the region.

“The United States, which is now actively reducing its military presence in Afghanistan, created the Taliban to oppose the Soviet Union, and after that, al-Qaeda came out of them,” Patrushev said. “Many decades later, Russia and its partners continue to deal with the difficult legacy of American geopolitics in Afghanistan, working for years to stabilize the situation in the country. And now Americans are playing the same destructive games. “The life of the civilian population suffers from continuous terrorist activity and an unfavorable socio-economic situation,” he said.

For the CSTO, the development of the situation in Afghanistan and the suppression of threats arising from its territory has been one of the priority areas of activity for several years. At the same time, Russia supports the efforts of all interested states to reconcile the warring parties and stabilize the situation in Afghanistan.
