Turkey has arrested 10 retired admirals, and Erdogan accuses them of planning a coup
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the statements of the former admirals in support of the Maritime Convention from Montreux exceed the freedom of expression and have the implications of a military coup.

Earlier today, Turkey detained 10 retired admirals who signed an open letter confirming the importance of the Montreux Convention for Turkish security, which aims to prevent the militarization of the Black Sea. The admirals supported the 85-year naval agreement governing the use of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles.

Turkish officials, however, interpreted it as a conspiracy against the constitutional order and that the declaration, signed by more than a hundred former senior naval personnel, posed a direct challenge to the civilian government because it was reminiscent of earlier military interventions.
