Macron: The EU should not join the US against China

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday, in an interview with the Washington think-thank Atlantic Council, that the European Union should not join the US as opposed to China.

Macron said China is “also a partner, a competitor and a systemic rival, which means it is a partner when you need to face some global issues, such as climate change.”

“They’re trying to change the system, they’re trying to reduce CO2 emissions,” Macron said.

French President Macron said two scenarios in the EU’s relations with China should be avoided.

“The first scenario is in which we are all in a position to unite against China. This is the scenario of the greatest possibility of conflict. This is, for me, counterproductive because it will direct China to strengthen its regional strategy, which will influence China to reduce cooperation on various agendas. “I think it’s harmful for all of us,” Macron said.

The second scenario, “which is unacceptable,” is the EU’s equal distance to China and the United States, Macron said.

“It doesn’t make sense, because we are by no means in a systemic rivalry with the United States. We share common values, we share a common history. We also need to face the same challenges regarding our democracies, ”Macron said.
