At least 17 people were killed and 40 others were injured when the Philippines’ Air Force plane crashed on Jolo island in the country’s southwest, Philippine Defense Minister Delfin Lorenzana said on Sunday.
The C-130 plane crashed at noon (07:00 Moscow Time) at Jolo Airport during the landing, CNN Philippines reported. “So far 40 wounded and injured were rescued and 17 bodies recovered. Rescue and recovery is ongoing,” Lorenzana said in a statement, adding that 92 people had been on board, including three pilots and five crew members.
The plane was carrying troops from southern Cagayan de Oro city. According to the Philippine Air Force, during the attempt to land the plane missed the runway and crashed in a nearby village, causing a fire. Firefighters have arrived at the scene.
